Coded Bias Screening

Australian Institute for Machine Learning
The Lot Fourteen Lecture Theatre
Friday 18 July 2025, 4:00PM — 6:00PM

Join us for a special screening of “Coded Bias” to explore the hidden biases in technology! AIML and the Lot Fourteen are thrilled to present a screening of Coded Bias, a documentary about artificial intelligence and the biases that can be embedded within. When MIT Media Lab researcher Dr Joy Buolamwini discovers that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, she worked to find out why these systems failed. After discovering that facial recognition programs only worked for her when she wore an actual white mask, she researches how else tech systems can affect minorities and embarks on a journey to push for the first-ever U.S. legislation against bias in algorithms that impact us all.

Coded Bias highlights how facial recognition systems can impact already vulnerable groups due to bias within the code. As companies use more machine learning tools, algorithms have substantial influence over critical human factors, including automated hiring processes, who's granted access to healthcare, those subjected to heightened scrutiny within police systems, and other matters.
